Reaching Communities grant from the Big Lottery Fund has funded the SBVS and HALE project from 2009 until 2019. We are open for new referrals and volunteers for the Shipley Area Links Befriending and Advocacy Service.
Shipley Area Links - befriending scheme organises volunteers to visit isolated older people in the Bingley, Shipley and Cottingley areas.
This service is run in partnership between HALE and SBVS and funded until at least 2016 by the Big Lottery Fund.
People over 50 years who are lonely, lack confidence or are isolated by difficulties such as mobility, mental or physical health, can ask for a visitor. Visits are supplemented by telephone calls, some activity support and advocacy according to need. Anyone over 18 years, a good listener, friendly and able to get out locally can volunteer as a befriender.
Befriending volunteers visit isolated older people at home across Shipley and Bingley. SBVS covers the Bingley area including Cottingley, Gilstead and Eldwick, Crossflatts, Wilsden, Cullingworth and Harden. HALE covers the Shipley area including Nab Wood, Baildon, Frizinghall and Wrose.
The Advocacy service works in the Shipley and Bingley areas, with individuals aged 50 and above, who want to enhance their independence. We are flexible and promote individual choices and decision making, it is an equal partnership and the Citizen Advocate works with you not for you. We are able to meet you in your place of residence or somewhere convenient for you, to plan and discuss what you would like from the service.
Our aim is to enable you to access and engage in new services, information and resources, take control of your affairs and be more independent. If an Advocate cannot provide what you need you will be signposted in the right direction.
This is a FREE service. For more information about Advocacy please contact Shahleen at Shipley & Bingley Voluntary Services on 01274 781222.
