About Scholemoor Beacon

Scholemoor Beacon is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation that works from the Community Centre in the middle of Scholemoor estate, Bradford BD7. We were established in 2009, but work to transform the old sports ground and develop services from the community centre have been going on for much longer.

The aims of Scholemoor Beacon are to ensure that we work with the local community of Scholemoor and surrounding area to:

  • Provide opportunities for learning, training, employment and enterprise
  • Support people who are living in poverty and face hardship
  • Provide opportunities for the community to come together and promote community cohesion
  • Improve the health and wellbeing of local people and reduce health inequalities

We currently provide a range of services including bingo, job club and a Wellbeing cafe. We also work in partnership with other agencies including Bradford Council Youth service and CHAS@StVincents.

This is a new service funded through the National Lottery Covid support grant and HM Government and is to complement and develop the existing telephone befriending work that we have been doing throughout the pandemic.

We have identified a gap and barrier in the current provision as we have no staff member with the necessary language skills. We therefore are looking for someone to join the team who is skilled at understanding and speaking in urdu. Pre Covid we worked with a group of older ladies who came to the centre for gentle exercise however we have not had the language skills to keep in touch and we know there will be other lonely and isolated older people.

The workers will also from time to time be required to help with the day to day running of the centre and take part in staff meetings.
